I am currently writing a science fiction novel called The Firecaves.
The Firecaves is set in an imaginary future in which people quickly adapt to the biomes they live in. Just one gender (she) exists in this future, with only minor sexual differences between the people who live there. Children have telepathic abilities that diminish as they reach adulthood. The story follows the teenage protagonist, Ollie, on her journey away from an alpine biome into a cave world that the people in the outside world ignore, but all depend on.
The novel, designed for a middle grade audience, explores questions of gender, social hierarchies, and environmental destruction. Aesthetically, it draws on gothic and rave-culture tropes, and is influenced by Journey to the Centre of the Earth.
